CBD oil, also known as Cannabinoid Oil, has been praised for its medicinal properties included relief for patients with epilepsy, reduced inflammation, and the relief of chronic pain for patients, but you may be wondering whether or not it lives up to the claims. Does CBD oil really help with pain relief? Could it work for you too? For many people with many different types of pain, the answer is yes. To answer this question, we have seen the research and are sharing the results about just how and why CBD oil does help to reduce pain.
In the first place, you may be wondering what exactly CBD oil is and how it works. CBD oil is a non-intoxicating, non-psychoactive marijuana extract that has been used to provide relief for everything from anxiety and insomnia to epilepsy and chronic pain.
Cannabidiol has been suggested to also limit inflammation in the brain and nervous system. This effect has many benefits in addition to the initial pain relief. It provides a benefit for people experiencing pain, insomnia, and certain immune-system responses. A 2015 Neuropathics study seems to confirm some of these claims. Within the Neuropathics study, CBD was found to “limit inflammation and oxidative stress” amongst test subjects and even reduced neuroinflammation in several disease-specific conditions.
The way this works is through your own body’s endocannabinoid system which regulates bodily functions such as sleep, pain, appetite, and stress responses. These endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoids receptors within the body’s nervous system. CBD oil provides the purported pain relief by impacting those endocannabinoid receptors. It sound complicated but is your body’s natural response to a natural treatment.
Another study published in the European Journal of Pain suggests that CBD oil is an effective anti-inflammatory and treatment for arthritic pain. This study found that transdermal CBD significantly reduced joint swelling without additional side effects. This reduction of swelling provides a great relief for those suffering from arthritis with severe pain in their joints. The study concluded that “data indicate[s] that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviors and inflammation without evident side-effects.”
Similarly, CBD oil has been found to reduce pain for cancer patients and those suffering from multiple sclerosis. A compilation of studies in Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management have state that “Numerous randomized clinical trials have demonstrated safety and efficacy for Sativex in central and peripheral neuropathic pain, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer pain.” Another study of 47 people with multiple sclerosis showed that those treated with a CBD extract for one month experienced a significant improvement in pain, walking, and muscle spasms when compared to their counterparts in the placebo group.
With so many studies and positive results regarding the use of CBD oil for chronic pain and inflammation, it seems to be an effective solution for many people. It just may be the solution for you too. As always, speak with your doctor before adding any supplements to your routine to insure safe consumption and reduce the possibility of interference with, or reaction to, other medications.
